Porter's Turkey Parentage Calculator works in reverse. Enter an offspring variety or genotype you have already produced or want to produce, and the calculator searches for possible sire and dam combinations capable of producing that offspring.

Search by Variety Name

Select Variety Name, begin typing the desired variety, and choose it from the suggestions. Select Male, Female, or Either Sex, then select Calculate Parents.

Search by Known Genotype

Select Known Genotype when you already know the offspring genotype. Enter the genotype and the calculator will identify the mapped variety when one is available. Loci that are not entered use the calculator's normal default states.

The E and N loci are sex-linked. Male and female genotype forms can therefore be different. When Either Sex is selected, the calculator considers and displays the appropriate male and female forms.

Search for Multiple Offspring

Select + Add Another Offspring Variety to search for a parent pairing capable of producing more than one desired offspring. Up to five offspring can be entered. Results must be capable of producing ALL offspring included in the search.

Parent Pairings

Every search checks all eligible parent genotype combinations, including split variations. Simpler sire genotypes appear first, with additional sire genotype variants farther down. During a longer search, View Results So Far displays live results while the calculation continues. Stop Calculation pauses the search and shows the pairings found so far; Resume Parentage Search continues from that point.

Producing a variety you do not already have: Check “Show pairings without using the requested variety as a parent” before calculating. Neither parent will be one of the requested offspring varieties. Leave it unchecked for the normal search.

Understanding the Results

Results show possible sire and dam combinations and the calculated percentage probability for the requested offspring. Results are ranked to favor useful, genetically simpler parent combinations and stronger probabilities when appropriate.

The first result is not the only possible breeding. Review the available pairings and choose the one that best fits the birds and genetics available in your breeding program.

Offspring Images

Images are displayed when available. Tap or click an image to enlarge it, then tap or click it again to return. Images are visual references; individual birds can naturally vary in appearance.

Grandparents

The Grandparents feature takes a selected parent back another generation and searches for possible Grandsire x Granddam combinations capable of producing that parent.

Show All Possible Offspring

Use Show All Possible Offspring on a parent pairing to see the other mapped offspring that breeding may produce, rather than only the offspring originally requested.

Sound Effects

Short, distinct sounds provide feedback when you use calculator buttons, select a variety, switch between Variety Name and Known Genotype, change dropdown selections, or enlarge and return images. A separate chime signals when a calculation finishes, and Reset Search has its own sound. No sound loops while a calculation is running.

Use the Sound: On / Sound: Off button beside Instructions & Features to enable or mute all calculator sounds. Sound starts on for a new visitor, and your choice is remembered in the same browser on that device when browser settings allow it.

If you cannot hear the sounds, check your device volume and whether the browser tab is muted.

Print / Save Results as PDF

The calculator includes a Print / Save as PDF feature that allows you to keep a permanent copy of your calculated breeding results for future reference.

After completing a calculation, select the appropriate Print / Save as PDF button to open a printable version of the results.

Printing and PDF saving are available for:

• Parentage Results: Save the possible sire and dam combinations and their calculated offspring probabilities.
• Grandparent Pairings: Save the possible grandsire and granddam combinations for a selected parent.
• All Possible Offspring: Save the mapped offspring varieties, genotypes, and probabilities produced by a selected breeding.

To save your results as a PDF, select Print / Save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF from your browser's print destination options. Select Save and choose where you want the file stored on your computer or device.

You can also select your printer to print a paper copy.

Tip: Saving results as a PDF is useful for maintaining breeding records, comparing possible parent combinations, and sharing calculated genetic information with other turkey breeders.

Removing an Offspring

Select Remove beside an offspring entry to remove it. Remaining entries move upward automatically. Existing calculated results are cleared because they were based on the previous set of offspring selections.

Reset Search

Select Reset Search to clear the current entries and results and begin a completely new parentage search.

Longer Calculations

Some searches are much more complex than others, especially searches for several offspring. Every search checks all parent combinations. If the calculator displays Calculating..., allow it to finish rather than pressing Calculate repeatedly.

The calculator can only identify varieties and genotypes currently included in Porter's genetic mapping system. Mappings may be revised or expanded as additional turkey color-genetics information becomes available.
