The Dark Gray is the homozygous gray version of the Oregon Gray turkey variety.
These can be produced out of Oregon gray breedings when the white allele is not given at the color locus.
The dark gray has grayish-black pigmentation in the body feathers. The typical black and white colored barring in the wing feathers appears as a slightly disrupted barring effect.
The adult pattern resembles those of a Narragansett somewhat but has more gray tones overall and no clear defined barring in the tail feathers.
Toms are a shade darker than hens. At hatch, the dark gray poult has gray down color with dark black or brown stripes on its back.
The genetics of the dark gray is bronze based with gray as well as the addition of the Narragansett mutation to create this phenotype.
Genotype: bb cgcg nn for males and n- at the Narragansett locus for hens.
This is a true breeding variety.
Approx. Mature Weights: Toms 33 pounds and hens 18 pounds.
